We left Ciudad del Carmen on the morning of Monday, November 27, for a 3-hour ride along the coast towards the city of San Francisco de Campeche. It was a hot and humid day so about mid-way through our trip, we stopped to cool down and have a seafood lunch by the beach before proceeding to our destination. We stayed for three nights at the Hotel Villa Escondida Campeche that cost us 650 pesos (~44.26 CAD) a night.

The Beach
There were work deadlines to meet while we were in Campeche so that is how we spent our time there. We did manage to explore a bit in the early evenings when we went to get dinner and were delighted by what we saw. Campeche was everything we expected Oaxaca to be and more. It has the same type of colourful colonial buildings and cobblestone streets, but the city is much cleaner, better-maintained, lacks aggressive panhandlers, and is located by the beach as a bonus.
The city has retained the old walls and fortifications that used to protect it from pirate attacks in the 17th and 18th centuries. It earned the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the state of preservation and the quality of its architecture.
The historic center of the city has a pedestrian street and a large section of it is used by restaurants on either side to seat their patrons. Having dinner in the open air under the stars and Christmas lights was one of the highlights of our time in Campeche.
