Day 215: El Salvador to Honduras

Tim and Marisa met us at our hotel on Thursday morning and the four of us rode towards the border to Honduras. As we got closer to the border, we came to a line-up of cargo trucks that was about three kilometers long. After dodging some insistent “helpers” and weaving between the trucks, we were able to get the vehicle importation for the bike cancelled and proceed toward the immigration building to exit the country.

Trucks behind us

While Phil was cancelling the vehicle importation, I took the opportunity to take some pictures of the truck convention. In the midst of my picture-taking, a couple travelling two-up on an orange bike in the other direction stopped for a short chat as they recognized me from the blog. If you’re reading this, hello and sorry for not getting your names. It was fun to feel like a famous person, but not in the way of the Kardashians.

Trucks ahead of us

We had the misfortune of arriving at the Honduras customs building just behind a busload of tourists so, the time to get through the border control took much longer than we would have liked. Plus, the day was very hot and Marisa and I were watching the bikes while fending off aggressive panhandlers and flying garbage due to wind gusts.

Honduras Customs

After two long and sweaty hours, we were able to leave the border and head to Choluteca, our stop for the night that was a 1.5 hour ride from the border. We stayed at the Hotel Baruch for 400 HNL (~22 CAD) and were to cross into Nicaragua on the following day as we had no plans to spend more time than necessary in Honduras. We had heard of the roadblocks that other travellers had to deal with due to the election that had taken place recently so, we opted to stay away from it.

Inside the building

We are happy to report that we did not run into any roadblocks or any other unpalatable issue during our short time in the country. Upon leaving, we were told that the roadblocks were over and everything was back to normal in Honduras.
