Days 15 & 16: Currency Exchange and Coffee Politics

On our final morning in Albuquerque, we started the day with a fruitless attempt at trying to change a small amount of Canadian cash that I have been carrying with me into U.S. dollars. Since I won’t be back to Canada for a while, I figured that American cash would be useful for the remaining days we’re here and South of the border as well.

I had initially tried to do this at a bank while we were in San Francisco and was told that I would need to have an account with the bank in order to exchange currency. Okay, so this time, I tried Money Mart and was told that they don’t do currency exchange. When I asked the person behind the counter about where I can do this, I was told that I should go to the bank as there are no other options. In disbelief, I decided to search online and it seemed to be true.

How is it that I can exchange currency at Money Mart in Canada and pretty much every street corner in Europe (I managed to do this with no issues even in Umeå – a small city in Northern Sweden), but it seems like I’d have better luck finding a leprechaun than doing it in the States? Or maybe when I say “Canadian dollars,” it sounds like “Iraqi dinars” and nobody wants currency that they likely won’t be able to sell. I’ll never know. For now, the Canadian cash is going to get stashed for when I go back.

Aside from that, we spent the rest of the day catching up with work and blogging at a nearby Starbucks. One of Phil’s musician friends (who also lives near the Walter White house in Albuquerque), Michael, met up with us in the early evening so the boys did some catching up before we went our separate ways for the rest of the evening.

The next day, we packed up and left Albuquerque for Deming, one of the two stops before we cross the Mexican border. The ride was not very long and since we didn’t stop to take any pictures of the bland scenery, we reached our destination in the afternoon.

We had a nice dinner at our hotel’s restaurant and finished off with some coffee, during which Phil was beside himself with amusement at the way I take my coffee – with cream and sugar. Apparently, it makes no sense to have coffee this way 😛
