Days 178 – 180: San Agustín Lanquín to Purulhá to Antigua Guatemala

On Wednesday morning, after a light and dairy-free breakfast, we held our heads up high and braved the dreadful road ahead of us. The 30 minutes it took to get from San Agustín Lanquín to the paved road of the highway seemed endless. We made it without falling or regurgitating so, when we finally made it to the good road, we took a short break to celebrate our victory and then headed to our stop for the night in Purulhá.

The ride was about two hours long and on the chilly side, but the road was good so, no complains. We stayed at Country Delights Hotel for 525 GTQ (~90 CAD). We had rented an apartment in Antigua Guatemala for a month, starting on Wednesday; however, the ride from San Agustín Lanquín would have been around seven hours long so, we decided to split the trip between two days. Plus, after the terrible roads of the prior few days and Phil’s onset of a nasty cough, the break and little splurge were much-needed.

On Thursday, we rode for over four hours to get to Antigua Guatemala. The ride was long; however, the road was mostly good, apart from some road repairs and congestion before Guatemala City, and we reached our destination tired, but happy.

Our neighbourhood for the next month

Late Friday morning, since we hadn’t bought any groceries yet, we went out for breakfast at Café La Parada (which became our favourite coffee spot in Antigua) and reunited with Tim and Marisa there.

Phil’s cough hadn’t improved, despite the over-the-counter antibiotics he had been taking for a few days, and he started getting light-headed while we were having breakfast. I made him eat a spoonful of sugar and then we went to a walk-in clinic where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He was given an initial round of treatment at the clinic and then prescribed some stronger antibiotics. Fear not, dear readers, for our favourite biker is currently back to his chipper, bright-eyed, and bushy-tailed self.

Getting detoxed

We went to a nearby grocery store after clinic and had our first home-cooked meal in a while. We were happy to be staying in one place for the next month and planned to take Spanish language classes once Phil was better.
